Bank Holiday ALERT…………….. so I had better get Part 3 of the missing
Blog (Part 2 is still under construction) out there because there are many
riches to be had musically this coming week over and above the normal weekly
and Monthly fixtures.
So let’s
start at The Bridge on Friday night………….
It’s going to be a busy place………….
Downstairs you’ll find the hordes that make up the mass ranks of ROMP in full frontal poetical open mic
mode. Always a great evening. Up stairs there’s a big treat for those
with a musical ear, where The Rotherham
Red Choir will be sharing the stage with Toein’ In The Dark in a presentation called The People United. For those who have so far not got their hands
on a copy of Toein’s new CD “About Time” I’m sure that there will be a few
copies on sale and I’m lead to believe that this might also be a landmark night
for the Band for other reasons. It’s a
surprise. But if you’re a Toein’ fan
you’ll want to be there. Starts around
8:00pm. More Details on the listings page HERE
The 41st
Wath Folk Festival kicks off. A weekend of main stage and smaller Concerts
/ competitions throughout the Village and mainly at The Red Lion and Montgomery
Hall. You’ll need to check the Web Site for ticket availability. The main Concerts look a little heavy on the
ticket price at £20 each for Friday Urban Folk Quartet, Birds of Chicago and The
Mighty Doonans : Saturday Toy
Hearts, Vin Garbutt and Heidi Talbot : and Sunday Wath Young Performers Award Winner, Bella
Hardy and Albion Band. Of
course if you buy Day / Weekend tickets it all works out a little cheaper and
gives you entry to all the other good things going on over the weekend. If you’re
not into the main Concerts but would like to sample the atmosphere of the event
the morning of Saturday is the best time with bun throwing and Morris Dancing
amongst other delights. More Detail HERE
Also
starting on Friday is the excellent Filey
Folk Festival. This year it’s bigger
than ever with some excellent acts performing for FREE over the course of the weekend. If Wath is at a so called
elite end then Filey is grounded in the grass roots featuring the best of
Yorkshire talent. Filey is a fine demonstration of a peoples
Festival put together on a shoe string, yet musically excellent. It’s a fine Festival model to be followed,
especially in these days when money is short.
So if you fancy a trip to the seaside I can really recommend this event
- he says having had a really great adventure there last year as The
Mashers. More Detail HERE
There’s
another four day Festival starting closer to home on Friday. The
Barnsley CAMRA Real Ale and Steam Festival at Elsecar. Not quite sure why the weekend of the Wath
Festival was chosen, but there you are. There’s
music throughout the weekend with The Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonigan kicking
it off on Friday night. (Question, do
the Bar Steward Sons ever sleep). More detail HERE
Friday night
there’s a treat at Rotherham’s newest Music venue, Memory Lane on Ship Hill when Soulmates
will be performing a live set. A great
excuse for a knees up.
Because of
the Youth Festival the Drop In Centre
on Wellgate will not be open on Saturday.
However, you will be able to find
us at The Trades. More detail about the Drop In Centre HERE
Then in the
evening Live At The Trades present a
top night of rock with Motorheadache, Hellbent For Ever and
Immotus. This one is looking
close to a sell-out, so if you’ve not already got a ticket get on line now at Wegottickets and book yours. There will be a limited number of door
tickets. Three top Bands for £3 with
proceeds going towards the Slamfest fund.
For those
wanting to travel into Sheffield, one of our number Diamond Velocity will be rocking it out at The O2 Academy. Tickets are £6. Go support Rotherham created music, in addition to the City's multi cultural Festival One City Many Cultures
Sunday 5th May and all the
Festivals continue. But a new venture
for RAE launches, weather permitting, as we start our Spring / Summer season of Monthly Music in the Park events. First up is one of Rotherham’s most promising
young Bands Whiskey Spirit, who will
be playing from 1:00pm on the Band Stand. More detail on the Slamfest site HERE
And then on Monday, in addition to all
the Festivals RVH present what they call a Showcase
of True Underground at The Charters with the brilliant Seconds Apart and Under the
Influence from around 5:30pm. Two other Bands are to be confirmed. I hope it’s warm and that they have some
beer.Links to details HERE
Meanwhile, I’d
just point you in the direction of a couple of continuing Art Exhibitions. At the Old Market Gallery Edwin Wraith’s wonderful paintings will
be on display until 11th May while in the ROAR Art Space a more
challenging exhibition of work by Davis
Six is available for viewing. You
might have to press the bell to get in to see this one.
Heads up to
some more top music coming next week.
On Friday 10th
at The Bridge Ian Huddleston’s new Band Be
The Revolution will be making their debut with top support from Dave Woodcock and the Dead Comedians. Free entry.
This is going to be a great night, and if you’ve not yet heard Ian’s new
work yet I think you might be in for a surprise.
And on
Saturday 11th Live at The Trades continues to rock with Powerage
banging out the sounds of AC/DC, and the fantastic sound of Cable 35. Another bargain night of music for £3.
Also on the
11th in Rotherham Outside Market there will be a Craft Market
involving some of the best crafters in the Town.
